Rude Copper 2002 was Banksy’s first organised commercial print release but by all accounts was anything but organised. Initially intended to be a run of 100 prints this was changed at the last minute to 250 with many extras also printed. Some were signed roughly 50 but no one knows for sure.
This was the first print sold and produced in conjunction with Steve Lazarides who became Banksy’s agent around this time. Steve who had no physical gallery at the time sold the prints from the boot of his car. The price on release was roughly £40 per print and in 2015 a hand-finished version went to auction and sold for £32,500.
Approximately 30 of the Rude Coppers prints had hand finished backgrounds and the prints were produced on two different types of paper, most also featured a red Banksy stamp in the right hand corner.
